Welcome to this installation guide about testing our first Thread-based home monitoring solution with pet filtering capabilities. This step-by-step guide will walk you through the different configuration steps and any difficulties you might have.

The devices in this kit are engineering samples. They create a Thread network and use it for communication. Only the border router uses Wi-Fi for communication with the access point. All the other devices use Wi-Fi for sensing only.

⚠️  Do not power off the border router, as all devices would disconnect from the internet.

1. Think ahead of a good location for your devices

nami alarm pods perform Wi-Fi sensing, which consists in exchanging Wi-Fi frames with each other and analyzing them, looking at any perturbation in the transmitted signals. Human bodies, made mostly of water, tend to absorb a lot of the Wi-Fi signals. By exchanging Wi-Fi frames, two geographically distant devices create a virtual tripwire that defines an area of your place in which events will be detected (for example, someone moving in the area). This area is what nami calls a sensing zone.

Generic placement considerations

• Place your alarm pod above the ground, ideally at waist level. Don't put it on the ground or too close to the ceiling for optimal results.
  
  
• Avoid placing your alarm pod behind large metallic objects.
  
  
• Do not stack multiple sensors into each other.
  
  

Distance requirement between the first device in the zone and the Wi-Fi access point

The first device of the zone will be set as the border router. It will be responsible for connecting to internet all the devices using the Thread network.

1. Place this device within a reasonable distance from the Wi-Fi access point

2. ⚠️ Do not power off this device, as all devices in the zone would disconnect from the internet.

The rest of the devices of the zone can be placed without any constraints about the distance to the Wi-Fi access point, as they will use the Thread network.

Distance requirements between two alarm pods

• To perform Wi-Fi sensing, two sensors must be geographically separated. We recommend having at least 2 meters / 7 feet between each device in the same zone. 
  
  
• If they are too far away from each other, they won't be able to connect to the Thread network. We recommend having at most 10 meters / 24 feet between each device in the same zone.

2. Pair your devices

Install the nami app

⚠️  Make sure you have the right version of the nami app installed.

Only these versions will allow you to pair the sensors.

You can check the version of your app by going in your profile page.

Start the pairing flow

Sign in to the nami app using your preferred sign-in mechanism.

Select a place where your account has the administrator role. If you don't have any place, you can create a new one or join an existing place with an invite.

You may now proceed to set up your 4 devices in your place.

Follow the “set up a single device” flow.

Select the zone

⚠️  The zone must not contain Wi-Fi only devices, as this preview version does not allow to mix Wi-Fi only with Wi-Fi + Thread devices.

Create a new zone, or select out without Wi-Fi devices inside.

First device placement

Make sure that this device is within range of a Wi-Fi access point (less than 10m/30ft.)

The first device of the zone will be commissioned as the Thread Border Router.

Before you start pairing a nami device

Make sure that the LED of the device is pulsing blue

This LED behavior indicates that the device is ready to be paired. If the LED of the device is not pulsing blue when the device is powered ON, please follow this procedure to reset the device.

Scan the QR code of your device

The first step of the pairing process is to scan the QR code of the device. If you just downloaded the nami app, you will need to provide the nami app permission to access the system camera. Ensure that camera permission is enabled for the nami app in your system settings.

If you encounter issues scanning the QR code of your device, please contact us and send us a picture of the QR code.

Establish bluetooth connexion

First, grant the nami app permission to use Bluetooth. Once you have successfully scanned the device QR code, please power your device at the intended location.

Your device should be discovered shortly by your smartphone, it should take less than 60 seconds. If you encounter issues establishing bluetooth connection with the device, please contact us to explain the nature of the issue faced.

Connect your border router to a Wi-Fi network [first device in the zone]

At this stage, your smartphone is going to pass the Wi-Fi credentials to your device. Ensure you know which Wi-Fi access point you intend to use for the zone containing this device.

⚠️ This step is skipped for non-first devices in the zone.

Scanning for Wi-Fi networks

Your smartphone will ask your device to scan for Wi-Fi networks around it. If the network you intend to use does not appear in the scan result, please check that your device is close enough to the Wi-Fi access point. Note that nami pairing supports hidden networks.

Joining a Wi-Fi network

Once you have selected a Wi-Fi network, you may be prompted to key in the credentials on your smartphone (if they have not already been saved). This information will be passed to your device and it will attempt to join the network.

Using a hidden SSID

Hidden SSIDs are supported by nami, you can simply tap on the "Other network" button after the Wi-Fi scanning result and manually enter the network name and credentials.

Connect to a Thread network (Android extra step)

The Android gives you the possibility to select the Thread network you want your device to use.

Pair the 2nd, 3rd and 4th sensors

By now, you should have successfully paired the first device (border router).

⚠️ Note that the same phone must be used to pair the other devices of this zone.

Follow again the setup a single device flow in the same zone, to pair the remaining devices.

All the steps related to Wi-Fi will be skipped this time.

At this stage, you have access to all the existing nami features through the nami app.

⚠️ All the existing features in the nami app are based on the previous version of the sensing algorithm. The only element based on the home 3.0 engine (pet filtering) is the added tile in the place screen showing the home 3.0 data.
