Dear Beta Tester,
Thank you for taking the time to experience these engineering samples from nami. Built with intelligent sensing technology, use them to monitor your home and care for your loved ones.
Before you start, please download the nami app.
Here are the steps that you need to set up this system, once the nami app is installed.
1. Create a nami account
Create a nami account, using an existing Apple or Google account. If you prefer, you can also use a fully anonymous account (if you do so, don’t forget to copy the recovery key available in the authentication page of the profile section - every time you wish to sign out).
2. Create a place
You need to create a place first before setting up your devices.
Note: You can also join other existing places. Administrators can generate invites in the people section of a place screen. The dashboard page allows you to monitor multiple places at a glance.
3. Install one kit
In what follows, we consider that you have received a single kit to cover your place. If you have multiple kits, please refer to the next section of the document.
A kit of three nami devices will allow you to create one sensing zone, composed of three sensing links between a pair of two devices. With only one nami device, sensing is not possible.
It works like a virtual tripwire between two nami devices, whenever a human crosses the area between two devices, the Wi-Fi signal is perturbed. The devices analyze those signals and detect the motion. The Wi-Fi signal between two devices must be of good quality, avoid placing them too far from each other or in a configuration with large metallic obstacles between them.
A group of sensing links is called a nami sensing zone, which covers a floor in a typical home. Do not place devices from the same nami zone on different floors of your home. Sensing links between devices are not meant to cross floors.
3.1 - Locate the Wi-Fi access point and think ahead of your device placement
You might have multiple access points on the area you wish to cover. If that is the case, locate the one which gives the best Wi-Fi coverage of the key area you wish to monitor.
Think ahead of where you want to place your three devices in the area covered by this access point. We suggest a maximum distance of 30 ft. (10m) between a nami device and the access point. Once you have a clear idea of the location for each device, open your nami app.
We suggest that the distance between the two devices stays between 10ft. and 40ft. Place your devices in an unobstructed area, and avoid having any large metallic objects in the path between your plugs.
3.2 - Pair the first device
- Open your nami app, go into a place screen, and add the first device.
- Create a room representing where you will place this device.
- Scan the QR code on your device (allow the nami app to use the camera). Place your device at the intended location and power it on. Discover your device on Bluetooth (allow the nami app to use Bluetooth).
- At the Wi-Fi scanning step, choose the SSID you would like to use. At that point, the device will automatically pick the access point with the highest connection quality. It is very important that the access point you wish to use is the closest to that nami device.
- Once the first device is paired, proceed with pairing the other two.
For more information and troubleshooting, please check-out the following page
3.3 - Pair the other two devices
Do not use plugs to power on the pod, nor stack the plugs. The distance between the two devices must be at least 10ft. for optimal sensing results.
During the Wi-Fi scanning step, it is essential that you choose the same SSID as used for the first device. The device will automatically look for the access point you used during the first pairing, which is why the distance requirements of 30 ft. (10m) must be respected.
4. What to test
The main purpose of this sentinel system is to demonstrate some sensing features nami has developed, including motion sensing. Turning on the aware mode will activate push notifications about the motion happening in your home.
Live motion graph
After setting up your devices, connect your mobile to the same Wi-Fi network as your devices, and look at the 30sec “live” motion graph in your place screen. Move and stop moving to test the precision of the sensing.
History motion graph
After a few hours of setting up your devices, you can look at the history graph to understand when motion was detected in your home. It will give you a good indication about when were people present in your home, and when nobody was there.
Keep in mind that today, nami sensing only detects motion. It will not pick up people present in the home that are not moving. We are working on the detection algorithm to address this limitation.
You may also pick up some false positive. You can adjust the sensitivity of your system in that case.

Control the current output of a plug
Use the button in the device page to control the current output.
Explore the mode features
You can assign a mode for your whole home, or a mode to a specific zone if you have multiple in your place. Turn your place in Aware mode and leave your mobile screen locked. Your mobile will receive push notifications about the motion status of your place.
Try out the intrusion detection
Arm your place or you zone using the mode control.
Move around in your home to trigger the detection. The detection time depends on your system sensitivity, it should be around 30 seconds for default sensitivity.
Once intrusion is detected in your home, you would have access to live information about the intrusion
After the intrusion is disarmed, you will have access to a detailed report in the place events
Enjoy monitoring, caring, and surfing through nami waves with our engineering samples. Your feedback and insights are welcome.
